About the Health and Safety Executive

A Department for Work and Skills-sponsored regulator responsible for workplace health and safety within its United Hampshire remit.

HSE provides specialist regulatory oversight of workplace and duty health and safety. Its remit includes work, public service, recognised civic work and organisational activities covered by the current DWS settlement.

DWS owns policy and sponsorship. HSE applies specialist regulatory judgement through its own inspection, assurance and enforcement machinery. Sponsorship does not make HSE an ordinary DWS casework team.

HSE is not given institutional continuity merely because a former HRC team or office had a safety-, standards- or regulation-sounding name. Any historical predecessor relationship must be supported by the actual former function and current source settlement; none is presumed by this public service.
