Inspections and assurance

How HSE examines health and safety arrangements within its remit.

An HSE inspection or assurance activity has a defined purpose, scope, lead officer and authority basis. HSE may review records, risk assessments, incident information, management arrangements and other relevant evidence that it is authorised to obtain.

The inspector records verified facts separately from professional assessment. Findings should identify the evidence, the safety issue and the action or response considered appropriate.

The organisation should receive a clear record of significant findings or required action where disclosure is appropriate. HSE follows up open actions before closing a case.
